黎巴嫩消息人士9日透露，俄羅斯部隊已開始協助敘利亞總統巴夏．阿塞德麾下政府軍作戰，初期角色雖屬「微小」且未參與地面戰鬥，但介入規模勢將擴大，包括打擊於敘境肆虐的「伊斯蘭國」（IS）等恐怖組織，甚或空襲節節進逼的敘國叛軍。
抗IS及美支持的叛軍
美國匿名國防官員也稱，俄軍近日派遣2艘戰車登陸艦至敘利亞濱地中海要港塔爾圖斯（Tartus）的俄國基地，並部署若干海軍陸戰隊，而在塔爾圖斯北方的大港市拉塔基亞（Latakia），俄方空運至南郊「巴席爾．阿塞德國際機場」的移動式航空管制設施與可容納數百兵員的組合屋已建構就緒，另有10餘輛裝甲運兵車進駐。
美國官員表示，俄軍真正意圖不明，研判或許將利用機場作為前進作戰基地，執行轟炸與空襲任務。
俄羅斯乃敘利亞傳統盟邦，也是阿塞德政權堅實盟友。
美國結合西方國際聯盟打擊IS等武裝恐怖組織之餘，也資助並組訓敘利亞叛軍，試圖推翻阿塞德政權。今年初以來，敘國政府軍屢屢失利，亟欲固守西疆沿岸地區。
伊朗同意俄機過境
保加利亞、希臘迫於美國與北約組織（NATO）施壓，8日關閉空中廊道，俄方9日起則改道由伊朗與伊拉克空域運補敘境。
美國國務卿凱瑞連日來兩度電詢俄國外長拉夫羅夫，聲稱美方「關切」俄軍之舉可能助長敘國戰亂，拉夫拉夫則強調，國際社會對抗IS，敘政府軍不可或缺，行動且須強化。
難民危機更難解決
駐莫斯科西方外交官指出，俄國增兵敘利亞，乃企圖在未來相關磋商中強化手中談判籌碼。但這也暴露出，美俄對解決敘利亞衝突的立場南轅北轍，因此想從源頭解決敘利亞難民危機，只怕更是渺茫。
